Disney Animated Movies List
This list is of all Disney copyrighted movies with animated characters. The "Classics" are numbered by Walt Disney Feature Animation. The table headers are 'clickable' and you can re-sort the list.
March 13, 2012 - I have been remiss in keeping you posted to Disney's antics this year. Let's start today with the box office. Disney has released their own movie, re-released their own movie, and released someone else's movie, Marvel has an "associated" movie, and a Pixar short film was released with the other Academy Award nominated shorts. Where does this leave us? According to The Numbers, for movies released in 2012, Beauty and the Beast is 5th at the box office ($81,267,087), Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is #16 ($48,065,270), John Carter is 28th ($30,180,188), The Secret World of Arietty is 38th ($17,572,965), and 2012 Oscar Shorts including "La Luna" is #62 ($1,673,123).
Upcoming animated series announced for Disney's TV channels include Wander Over Yonder and Gravity Falls on Disney Channel, Ultimate Spider-Man, Motorcity, and TRON: Uprising on Disney XD, and Doc McStuffins and Sofia the First on Disney Junior. Toonzone has all of the details in the original press release.
PS. At the Oscars, Disney did only Okay. Octavia Spencer won over Jessica Chastain for Actress In A Supporting Role (both of The Help), and Bret McKenzie's "Man or Muppet" won over "Real in Rio". "Non-winners" include War Horse and The Help which lost to The Artist for Best Picture, while Viola Davis of The Help lost to Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) for Actress In A Leading Role. War Horse's Cinematographer, Art Director & Set Decorator, Sound Editors, and Sound Mixers all lost to Hugo, while its composer lost to The Artist. Hugo's Visual Effects also won over those from Real Steel, while Pixar's La Luna also lost, to The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.

February 18, 2012 - A week late, but here are the results of Disney's efforts at last week's 54th Grammy Awards. January 31, 2012 - So, apparently Super Bowl commercials are now such a big deal, that the commercials themselves get their own teaser trailers. Who 'da thunk? Here are the teaser trailers for Super Bowlcommercials for John Carter and The Avengers.
------------
January 30, 2012 - Academy Award nominations. Sometimes they're on the money, sometimes they miss the mark. Not for me to decide. At any rate, they cause a lot of talk. Here's some more. I was disappointed Winnie the Pooh missed out, but not Cars 2. As well, I was hoping for another song nomination for The Muppets (in another time, perhaps even three song nominations would've happened - the current one, but also ones for "Pictures In My Head" and "Life's a Happy Song") and I would've been glad to see a nomination for Elton John's "Hello Hello" from Gnomeo & Juliet, which actually sounded better as solo on the soundtrack than the Lady Gaga duet did in the film. Aside from all that, I was not unpleased with how things worked out. I was suprised by the Marvel shut-out of Thor, X-Men: First Class, and Captain America: First Class - at least for effects editing, sound, or some other technical arena. Nonetheless, here are Disney's share of the nominations, 13 in total:
Actress in a Leading Role
Viola Davis in "The Help"
Actress in a Supporting Role
Jessica Chastain in "The Help"
Octavia Spencer in "The Help"
Art Direction
Rick Carter (Production Design) & Lee Sandales (Set Decoration) for "War Horse"
Cinematography
Janusz Kaminski for "War Horse"
Music (Original Score)
John Williams for "War Horse"
Music (Original Song)
Bret McKenzie for Music & Lyrics for "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets"

Brunson Green, Chris Columbus, & Michael Barnathan for "The Help"
Steven Spielberg & Kathleen Kennedy for "War Horse"
Short Film (Animated)
Enrico Casarosa for "La Luna"

Richard Hymns & Gary Rydstrom for "War Horse"

Gary Rydstrom, Andy Nelson, Tom Johnson, & Stuart Wilson for "War Horse"

January 3, 2012 - So by my count between Disney, Touchstone's alliance with DreamWorks and its hold-over partnership with Miramax, and Marvel who had movies created and released by both Paramount and Fox, the theatrical release count for Disney is at 18 movies for last year. As well, four of their releases from 2010 were still playing in theatres when the clock rolled over to 2011. So, here's how Disney fared at the box office last year. The first number indicates the movie's overall position in the market for 2011; the second number is just for movies that opened in 2011. (*Asterisks* are for movies that are still playing, and will have totals added to next year's list):
5./5. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Disney/Buena Vista) $241,063,875
7./7. Cars 2 (Disney/Pixar/Buena Vista) $191,450,875
8./8. Thor (Marvel/Paramount) $181,030,624
10./10. Captain America: The First Avenger (Marvel/Paramount) $176,654,505
11./11. The Help (DreamWorks/Touchstone/Buena Vista) $169,345,705*
14./14. X-Men: First Class (Marvel/20th Century Fox) $146,408,305
22./22. The Lion King (3D release & 2D re-release) (Disney/Buena Vista) $109,911,305* (Lifetime total: $438,450,810)

99. Tangled (Disney/Buena Vista) $32,999,950 (Lifetime total: $200,821,936)

266. Secretariat (Disney/Buena Vista) $645,831 (Lifetime total: $59,699,513)
473. The Tempest (Miramax) $46,310 (Lifetime total: $277,943)
684. Zokkomon (Disney/Buena Vista) $2,815
PS. In the last few posts, for some reason I've been counting Cowboys & Aliens as a Touchstone release of a DreamWorks movie. It is DreamWorks, but actually came to theatres by way of Universal Pictures. In bad internet form, I've deleted any mentions of it from previous posts. Sorry for any confusion!

December 23, 2011 - Every year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences gives out some awards. The Oscars. To some, they are a big deal. As the longest running awards in the entertainment industry (to my knowledge), they seem to carry some clout. This means that in the weeks and months leading up to the awards, we get short-lists and eligibility lists for all the categories involved. Eligible pictures include lists of eligible actors, and there is much interesting information involved in all of this. That said, here's what Disney has released this year (and what Disney properties have been released by others)...

December 22, 2011 - By the way, have you seen these John Carter television commercials yet?
------------
December 22, 2011 - Eight new posters for The Avengers, but you've seen these images before, on the banners posted last week. Disney Junior has also announced a new animated television show coming 2013, The Happy Hugglemonsters, and a new title for what used to be The Snow Queen, the (uninspired) Frozen
------------
December 15, 2011 - Of all the awards of all the arts, I dislike the Golden Globes the most - if you look into it's history, maybe you'll see why and join me. Nonetheless, it's worth a mention that some Disney stuff got nominated today, including The Help (5), War Horse (3), Cars 2 (1), Gnomeo & Juliet (1), and Modern Family (3). There. 'Nuff said. In more important news, there is a new poster for Disney's John Carter, a new poster for Columbia Pictures' & Marvel's Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance, and two new banners for The Avengers. All this and a new Ghost Rider trailer too. Enjoy!
------------
December 12, 2011 - When it rains it pours. Here are three new banners for Sony's new Disney's Marvel's Spider-Man movie, The Amazing Spider-Man, courtesy of Comic Book Movie.com.
------------
December 12, 2011 - It has arrived - the trailer for the first Men In Black movie (cleverly titled Men In Black 3) in 10 years. The trailer is posted here for your convenience & viewing pleasure. By the way - the original Men In Black appearance was in a comic book published by Aircel Publishers. Aircel was then bought out by Malibu Comics, and Malibu was then bought out by Marvel Comics, which was then bought out by Disney. I may not go through those steps many more times (Thanks, Wikipedia!). The previous movies and the television series were made after Marvel's ownership, but this will be the first production to take place after Disney's ownership.
December 12, 2011 - This summer, Disney debuted a new Winnie The Pooh movie, and it seemed as though they might be trying to breathe new life into a brand that for the last 20 years or so had taken over the kiddie market. A. A. Milne's creation had always seemed to be for the young and the young-at-heart, but it seemed as though Disney only saw potential dollar signs with pre-schoolers. Well, now they're back with a vengeance. World Screen tells us that Disney Channel EMEA (that's Europe, Middle East, & Asia) is bringing in Tales Of Friendship With Winnie The Pooh, a 5-minute bedtime story series starring our favourite bear. Eighteen episodes have currently be ordered. My main frustration, aside from it adding to my challenge of trying to convince my wife that Winnie's not just for little children, is that it's incredibly hard to PVR all these five-minute television series that Disney has on the go. Is there really money in these? They have no commercial breaks, and no one ever knows when they're on! Am I right, ZeFronk? Minnie's BowToons? Right?
In less angry news, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced their short-list for the Best Visual Effects Oscar. Disney titles to make the short list are Captain America: The First Avenger, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Reel Steel, Thor, and X-Men: First Class.

December 4, 2011 - Also not very "Disney-ish" (see yesterday's post), are the DreamWorks movies that Disney is distributing to theatres under the Touchstone Pictures banner. Nonetheless, Collider.com has released a compilation of 7 short clips from the upcoming War Horse, releasing this Christmas.
December 3, 2011 - I understand that there may be some who consider Marvel to be fairly non-Disney-ish. As a self-proclaimed "Completist" however, all things Marvel, Muppet, Pixar, etc., etc., are worthy of consideration. Thus it behooves me to discuss today an upcoming project from Marvel Knights Animation. Marvel Knights Animation produces limited animation versions of published comic books, with varying degrees of success. Since the Disney acquisition of Marvel, several projects have been released - some to iTunes first (but all on DVD now) they include Astonishing X-Men: Gifted, Iron Man: Extremis, Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers, and Black Panther (which actually premiered first on television - in Australia). Before Disney, they also produced Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D.. It has been announced that Marvel will continue to animate their Astonishing X-Men series, and now the title of the next set has been revealed to be Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous. Todd Casey, supervising producer of Dangerous has an interview at Marvel.com where he discusses some of the process.
